Distance does matter; online activities enhances RL

Seen in Wired:  “Technology… has made proximity matter more than ever.” Rather than communication technology contributing to the demise of distance, Tim Harford in the February, 2008, Wired, writes that technology enhances our F2F lives — that our online activities, like using Facebook, enrich our non-virtual, local, lives.  Distance does matter.  Frankly, the dream of being able to live anywhere and telecommunicate doesn’t live up to the hype:  anybody who’s worked in a situation with remote workers one only ever encounters in emails or phone calls and never in person knows that remote working/telecommuting ain’t all it’s cracked up to be.  Face time is critically important in fostering trust.
